Summary

In the EURO-CORDEX initiative, as well as at Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) using the EPISODES model, climate projection data have been generated based on various socio-economic scenarios involving assumptions about future greenhouse gas emissions, technology, and societal developments. For Europe and Germany, data based on the SSP scenarios are available at a spatial resolution of approximately 12 km grid spacing. All available simulations undergo quality control at the DWD. Based on this evaluation, suitable simulations without technical or methodological errors are included in the DWD reference ensembles. This includes the availability of important near-surface climate-relevant variables such as air temperature (2 m), precipitation, and wind speed (10 m). Climate projections are excluded if they show anomalies during the three-stage quality assessment. The DWD reference ensembles from 2026 contain datasets with a resolution of 0.11°. The climate projections of the DWD reference ensemble were statistically downscaled by the DWD to a 5 km × 5 km grid and adjusted using multivariate bias correction methods. Daily data for the period 1971–2100 are available.

The empirical-statistical downscaling method EPISODES is described by: Kreienkamp, F., Paxian, A., Früh, B. et al. (2019). Evaluation of the empirical-statistical downscaling method EPISODES. Clim Dyn, 52, 991-1026. DOI: 10.1007/s00382-018-4276-2.
